The Beauty of Basil

By Briscoe White Of all the herbs we grow at The Growers Exchange, basil is by far the most popular. Its distinctive flavor adds zest to tomato dishes, salads and many other foods. A warm season annual, it grows four to six feet in height. To grow basil outdoors, transplant small plants to a sunny, well-drained location with fertile soil. Plant in a spot near your kitchen so leaves can be collected as they are needed. The number one reason for problems with basil is planting too early. As basil does not tolerate cool temperatures it is best to wait until after May 1 to plant outside. Night temperatures should be in the high 50s. To grow small quantities of basil early in the season, try potted plants in a sunny window. Remember, warmth and plenty of sun are necessary for vigorous plants. Frequent pinching will give leaves for cooking and keep the plants tight and bushy. To store basil, puree leaves and freeze in ice trays, or if you dry the leaves, do it in a microwave to keep the leaves from turning black. Grow a succession of plants to ensure a regular supply of leaves. Among the most popular varieties that we grow are: Basil Genovese is a favorite for authentic Italian basil flavor and appearance. The tall and relatively slow to bolt stems bear dark green leaves about 3″ long. This is a wonderful pesto basil. For summer long harvest be sure to keep your Basil from going to flower. Plant in full sun. Grows 24-30″. Italian Large Leaf Basil is a sweeter pesto type basil with high yields in the garden. This is a large herb with medium-dark green leaves. When compared to Genovese the flavor and scent are sweeter and less clove like. Plant in full sun and harvest frequently to keep from going to flower. Grows 24-30″ tall. Nufar Basil is a must for every herb gardener. This large leaf basil is resistant to fusarium wilt- the killer of many a garden basil plant. Nufar Basil is almost identical to Italian Large Leaf Basil- the pesto favorite. This basil has a sweet scent and flavor and will grow up to 30″ tall. Plant in full sun and be sure to harvest frequently to keep it from going to flower. Basil Red Rubin is a vigorous, purple, Italian Large Leaf type. This basil has high yields and great flavor. The flat, 3″ long leaves stand out in the garden with their purple bronze coloration. Plant in full sun and harvest frequently to keep from going to flower. Grows 18-24″ tall. In 1985, Briscoe White opened The Growers Exchange in an abandoned Texaco station on a busy urban street corner in Richmond, Virginia. The facility has grown over the years, and is now 5 distinct growing environments with 5 acres under cover. Briscoe has over 25 years of gardening experience. Getting The Most From Business Cards

By Loralea Prentis In order to get the most from your business card, you have to make sure that it stays around for a while; hopefully a long while. A card that has gone straight to the trash does you no good. Think of the poor baby you have worked so hard designing just laying there in the trash, waiting for incineration. Sort of makes you want to cry, doesnt it? Okay, maybe thats taking it a bit far. It is upsetting though. What can you do to prevent this card tragedy from happening to you? A number of things: Paper quality. It must be high. Period. Ink must not run. Place a drop of water on your card and see what happens Size must be standard 3.5 x 2 inches. Larger ticks people off Colour. This is a big deal. Anything over 3 colours is distracting (photographs exempt) and black and white is just boring. Find the middle ground and go with it Message. Your business card should clearly tell people what you do. If it isnt clear, you need to do some work and re-word it. Font size. Font should be no smaller than 10 points; otherwise its too hard to read. Your card is around even when you arent. It can speak for you, do advertising for you. Make sure it does just that, and stands out from the rest, but in a good way. Give out lots and lots of cards, 2 or 3 at a time, so they may be passed on to others. Your cards do you no good sitting on your desk; give them away, thats what they are for! You can always have more made. The Importance Of Wedding Songs

By Vicki Churchill If you go back to the early wedding of the 16th century the wedding songs played an integral part of the ceremony. The tradition was for the bride to be led down the alter by her farther accompanied by the wedding songs of their choice usually something slow and fairly quiet. After the vows had been taken she then walked back down the aisle with her new husband accompanied by a much livelier tune signifying the happiness of the occasion. So what wedding songs to choose? This can be a difficult task as there is so much out there to choose from. Are you having a traditional or a contemporary wedding? Depending on the type of wedding you are having will probably reflect the type of music that you will have. The wedding songs that you will choose will affect the whole mood of the celebrations and therefore need careful thought. If it is to be a traditional type of wedding then maybe you will opt for the more traditional types of wedding songs e.g. Wedding March by Mendelssohn’s and the ever popular Bridal Chorus by Wagner better known as here comes the Bride. Maybe you are having a traditional wedding but do not want to stick to the traditional wedding songs, by choosing different ones you will make your wedding celebration much more memorable to your guests. Are there any contemporary or classical pieces of music that you and you partner find memorable to you both? If so maybe you could have these as your wedding songs which will serve as a reminder of you very special day. How about hiring a vocalist or a musician to play your wedding songs live, this would certainly change the whole mood of the occasion. However you would need to check with your church venue etc that they would be happy with this arrangement. The most important thing to remember when choosing your wedding songs is to make it personal to you and your partner. Do not try to please your guests, this is your day and the wedding songs are being played for you so make sure they are what you want After you have chosen the song you wish to be played when walking down the isle you need to work out the songs you would like played at your wedding reception. The First dance in always important as this is where the newly married bride and groom dance together in front of the guests. Usually the bride and groom will use a song that is special to them or has some memories associated with for the first dance. Kona Cotton: The Quilter’s & Embroiderer’s Dream Fabric

By Deb Schneider What, Exactly, Is Kona Cotton? Kona(R) cotton is a premium, 100% cotton broadcloth from Robert Kaufman Fabrics in Los Angeles. The company introduced the fabric in the 1980’s in response to the then rapidly emerging quilting industry, an interest that continues unabated today. It is a soft, light fabric, often called the ‘Quilter’s Cotton’, that is also ideal for fine apparel such as children’s clothing; soft, comfortable shirts; dresses; applique and home decorating. It has a ‘meaty’ hand, which means you can really feel the difference when you touch the fabric and that makes it a joy to work with. Warps. And Wefts, Too Kona cotton has a high 60 by 60 thread count. This means there are 60 warp threads and 60 weft threads per square inch of fabric. Until I did some research, I didn’t know what warp and weft threads were. (I had never even heard the word ‘weft’.) A warp thread is a support thread in the loom, long and strong and usually tied down onto the loom; a weft thread is passed back and forth between the warp threads to form cloth. It is that high thread count, all those warps and wefts playing together, that make Kona cotton a soft, light, yet very durable material; one of the best woven fabrics available for hand or machine quilting. Pre-use Care It’s a good idea to launder the fabric to remove any sizing/finish before using it in your project. Treat it as you would any new 100% cotton fabric: Gentle wash, mild detergent, tumble dry low, remove promptly and iron. Expect about a 1-3% shrinkage. What About Color? Kona is available in plenty of colors, 170 solid colors according to the manufacturer’s web site, RobertKaufman.com. And a quick search for ‘hand dyed Kona cotton’ will pop up vendors offering hundreds of colors and patterns of beautifully dyed Kona cotton fabric. But Aren’t You an Embroiderer? Yes, I am a machine embroiderer and those same qualities that make Kona cotton ideal for quilting and sewing apply to machine embroidery, too. That meaty feel I mentioned makes it very easy to hoop and quick to stabilize. The push/pull factor is minimal and, best of all, the stitched out designs are gorgeous on it. Even though there a many cheaper fabrics, I test all my embroidery designs on Kona cotton and turn to it first for any finished embroidery project I have. A Couple Christening Party Games for Everyone

By Gail Leino The Christening is an important event for the parents of a baby, though the child probably wont remember it, but youll certainly remember whether or not you had any good Christening party games after the event. Youll probably have a few kids and adults and some older people at the party so youll want a mixture of christening party games to choose from. Push Along: This is a fun Christening party game any guests can really get into, well everyone who is still limber enough to play. You can certainly encourage those not playing to cheer and root for their favorite Christening party game player. Those in the race must pretend to be babies and push a ping pong ball to the finish line with their nose. Be sure to get enough ping pong balls for the Christening party games because everyone in the race will need to have one. Also set up a start line and a finish line with masking tape, string or a chalk line. Its tough to stay on a straight course when playing push along so make sure you separate the players enough that they dont run into each other. Feeding Time: This is a laugh riot to have at your Christening party games, but it may be more suitable for a Christening where a lot of adults are present. The women at the party will sit in chairs on the opposite side of the Christening party area. Give each woman a baby bottle filled with something to drink (you can use milk) and each woman should also have a bib shes going to put on her baby. Set the same number of men at the starting line of the Christening party games area. When the race begins, the men will run to the women and one man will get into each womans lap. The women should tie the bib on their baby and then feed him from the bottle. The men cant touch the bottles with their hands. When a team has finished their bottle, the woman removes the bib and they both run back to the starting line. The first pair to complete the Christening party game task is the winners. When you get the guests at the Christening party games together it will be loads of fun for all. Take lots of pictures, especially during the second game because its a riot! Mrs. Party… Gail Leino takes a common sense approach to planning and organizing events, celebrations and holiday parties with unique ideas for Christening party supplies and fun free educational party games. Making Homemade Gizmos For Fun - Inexpensive And Rewarding Projects

By Alan Detwiler Making simple devices is fun for any young person who likes to tinker and build. The build-it-yourself enthusiast will get a great sense of accomplishment from creating self-designed items. In most cases, common materials and items from around the house are all that is needed. You may need to purchase some inexpensive items such as glue or small nails. Many simple devices can be made with tools that most people already have such as scissors, hammer and pliers. Simple devices can be built in between 15 minutes and 1 hour. Particularly involved projects may take many hours to complete. The items made could be useful, artistic, or clever. A variety of types of projects can be made: toys and playthings, curiosities and novelties, useful and practical items. There are books written particularly for the adolescent or young adult who enjoys making interesting mechanical devices and gadgets. A good book is written to make constructing the described items easy. Projects are described using clear wording. Diagrams are included to assist in ease of understanding. Choose a book that has these features: Most casual do-it-yourselfers will have the needed items around the house and/or garage. Only low cost and no cost materials are needed. Most items are made from small pieces of wooden boards, coat hanger wire, paper, used containers, and discarded household items or low cost items found in hardware stores. There are no kits to buy. The projects require common tools such as a scissors, hacksaw, screwdriver, pliers, knife, file or drill. Books are available on a wide variety of projects. Books can be choosen that deal mostly with items that are mechanically interesting or clever. The items may be simple mechanical curiosities, appealing because of their shape or structure. Or choose a book specifically about toys and playthings. Or go for whatever type of homemade creations appeal to you. One particular category is improvised devices. These are homemade items made from whatever materials that happen to be available. The items typically serve some purpose but may be appealing for some other reason. Building them is especially fun because the finished item is a kind of trophy for the builder’s ingenuity and self-reliance. And you have the finished item to admire and to use for whatever purpose it serves. Definition of Streamate

By Peter Portero A popular means of finding a dating partner has become the Internet but there are disadvantages to this. The most common underlying problem with dating sites is pictures. Individuals that submit pictures to their profiles get more attention than those that do not. Unfortunately, people question the legitimacy of pictures. People can post photos when they were 3-10 years younger, 10-30 pounds slimmer. They also only provide shots of themselves that make themselves look good or have been professionally altered. In comes the term streamate, also known as streammate, which stands for “streaming mate”. This gives you a means to meet others via webcams. There are currently no websites out there where men and women from the United States can join but the technology for doing so is fast approaching. Webcams have currently been very successful at bringing together Eastern European and Asian women together with men from the United States, Canada, and Western Europe. Mail order bride services started using webcams to show their male customers that they were getting quality females that could speak English in real time. The days of getting a woman that was either not pretty nor spoke any English is over. By 2008, it is expected that this technology will become very mainstream and part of the arsenal of all or most online dating websites. So get your webcams ready. Cams FAQ is currently monitoring how well Free Streamate Chat and Epic Cams have been doing at getting Eastern European women and American men together. Nokia 6102, 6103 and 6102i; Camera Phone

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jawahn_Thompson]Jawahn Thompson Not long after introducing their 6102 model (6103 for T-Mobile) cellular telephone, Nokia put out the 6102i, essentially adding in the feature they must have forgotten with the 6102, Bluetooth capability. They didn’t add Bluetooth in exchange for any of the winning features that made the 6102 and 6103 so popular. Unless you have a very keen eye for detail, you won’t notice any cosmetic difference between the three models. With conservative lines and a traditional clamshell closure, the 6102 family of phones is very sleek without being flashy. As with many of Nokia’s clamshell phones, you can see basic information, such as battery level, signal strength and time on the external LCD screen with capacity of up to 4000 colors. On the 6102i Bluetooth model, you’ll find the infrared port along the right side of the phone. The volume keys are on the left where previous Nokia owners will find very familiar. The speakerphone can be found along the spine of the phone and the pop-port connection is along the bottom. Once you open the 6102, 6103 or 6102i you’ll find the easy to read 65K color screen. Sure, you could spend more for 262K color or even 16.7 million color screens that the higher-end models are boasting of. Taking photos is quick and easy with Nokia’s 6102 line. The lens is located at the top of the camera when closed and just above the pivot when open. Once you’ve triggered the camera, you can begin snapping shots with the phone open or closed just by aiming and pressing the dedicated camera key. The .3 megapixel won’t take Ansel Adams images and does come up a little lacking compared to other standard middle-of-the-road mobile devices that are now including 1.3 megapixels with up to 3+ megapixels found in many higher-end models. Don’t expect to make prints of any pictures you shoot. If you use the camera capabilities to make phone wallpapers or send to friends on their digital devices. Your still shots can be up to 640 x 480 in size with settings for high, normal and basic image quality. When the camera is set to high resolution, all .3 megapixels will be used. Fewer pixels are used to create the image when set to normal and fewer still when on the basic setting. There are timer and night mode functions included in the 6201 line of phones, but they are mediocre at best. No digital zoom, artistic filter, exposure or brightness adjustments and lack of color balance all make the camera feature a bit more disappointing than previous and more recent Nokia models. Video recording resolution is 128 x 96 pixels and is encoded in 3GP codec format. You can send video recordings to friends and family, but don’t expect to win any Emmy’s for your direction or capture of the event of the century. Even if you could capture it, the blurriness and overall low quality of the video clips would render it almost useless. Bottom line, if you want to take pictures or video with your camera for usefulness rather than novelty, look to another Nokia model. Just as the Nokia 6102 falls short in the camera and video department, so it does in the audio department. There’s no MP3 player and the quality is downright inadequate. The saving grace is that this device does include an FM radio with the capability to preset up to 20 stations and it supports MP3 and downloadable ringtones. As mentioned earlier, sending text messages is pretty easy with this phone. Nokia bridged the gap between messaging and chatting by adding AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger capabilities to this phone. Chatting by phone takes on a whole new meaning. You aren’t limited to text-only messages, you are also able to send and receive multimedia messages in the form of pictures. The recently introduced Nokia Xpress will allow you to send video as well. The package of applications on the 6102 line of phones is very similar to other Nokia phones: a phone book that holds up to 500 entries, an alarm clock, calculator, timer, calendar, notes and to-do list. The 6102i is equipped with POP3, IMAP4 and SMTP protocols to allow you to check your email without much work. The 6102 line is Java compatible. Storage capacities are less than stellar, with just 4.2 MB of internal memory. This might leave you wanting more if you are a shutterbug, like to store email or text messages or just like to download games and ringtones in your spare time. There’s no expansion slot, either, so you only get 4.2 MB. If you are looking for a quality phone without flashiness that comes with many updated devices, the Nokia 6201 line might be for you. With Bluetooth and a solid design, you’ll find this little nugget to be handy and sturdy with Internet capabilities without a lot of other fancy gadgetry to pay for. The article on this [http://yourconsumerelectronics.com/nokia-camera-phone/]nokia camera phone was brought to you by your consumer electronics. Secrets Of Organic Rose Plant Gardening

By Charles Farricielli How Nature Works Whether it is roses, other flower gardening, or just about any type of plant, the secret to successful organic gardening of any kind is to understand the way nature works. Nature always tries to maintain a delicate balance. By understanding the basics of how plants grow, you will understand how to maintain natures balance and thus keep your roses healthy. Basically, water and nutrients are absorbed into the root system and pulled up through the stems into the green leaves by the process of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a plant process that uses water and energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates that it uses for growth and other plant functions. The carbohydrates are stored in the branches and stems of roses, trees, and other plants. These stored carbohydrates are used as reserve energy for the plant. When a crises occurs, such as a broken stem or pathogenic attack, the stored carbohydrates are used. Stored carbohydrates are also used in the spring to create new stems and foliage. A natural soil environment teems with bacteria, fungi, nematodes, earthworms, and other soil organisms. Many of these soil organisms break down dead leaves and other materials into humus, which enriches the soil. Other soil organisms form symbiotic relationships with roses and other plants. A symbiotic relationship is a relationship that is beneficial to all participants in the relationship. Mycorrhizal fungus creates an important symbiotic relation with roses and other plants. Mycorrhiza attaches itself to the roots of your roses and other plants. It uses some of the carbohydrates stored by your plants to grow, but helps your roses and other plants by making minerals more available. In a healthy soil environment, the mycorrhizae attached to one of your roses will grow and become interconnected to the mycorrhizae of other roses and plants. In effect, it provides a secondary root system for your garden plants. Roses and other plants also release exudates from their roots that attract beneficial organisms. As an example, exudates from rose roots attract friendly bacterium that ward off pathogenic fungi. Beneficial soil organisms, which are found in natural humus and compost, also make minerals more available to your roses and other plants. Beneficial soil organisms also help protect roses and other plants from predatory life forms. Another important thing to understand is that plants of all kinds are a little bit like humanssome get along very well and some dont. Some plants grow well together and actually help each other survive. Other plants inhibit neighboring plants. Plants that grow well together are referred to as companion plants. Companion plants are an important factor in any garden. We will talk more about them later. Organic growers recognize that pathogenic attacks are an indication that the plant or plants are out of balance. Organic growers know that pathogens cant get a foothold on a healthy plant. Commonly used chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides destroy soil organisms and throw roses, flowers, and other plants out of balance. The imbalance created by these chemicals attracts pathogens. Our meddling also creates havoc in roses and other plants. Over-pruning reduces carbohydrate storage, throws the plant out of balance, and often opens the door to pathogens. Hybridization often creates weaker plants. The practice of grafting rose stems onto a different root stock often creates roses that are susceptible to pathogenic attacks. Creating Your Own Rose Garden If you want to plant a rose garden that consists of two or three roses, or a whole bunch of roses, you need to begin planning. The first thing to do is to think about where you want to plant your roses and what colors you might like. Be sure to consider the other colors in your yard, as well as your house, walkways, etc. Roses grow best with a minimum of six hours of full sun, although some varieties can tolerate a bit more shade. Your shade/full sun areas will affect your possible rose garden locations. The next thing to do is to find out what roses grow well in your climate. Look at rose gardens in your local area to see what roses seem to grow well and how much you like them. Ask nursery experts what roses grow well in your area. Another good source is your local rose club. This will give you a good idea of the colors, sizes, and other characteristics that will grow well in your area. Companion Plants Once you have decided on the roses you like, you need to learn about companion plants. Roses really do love garlic, as well as other plants of the onion family. Onions are of the order Asparaginales and family Alliaceae. The onion family is made up of 500 species. Although planting garlic in your rose garden will help protect your roses, there are many other onion varieties that will protect your roses and also provide beautiful flowers to enhance your roses. Marigolds, mignonettes, and thyme are also good companions for roses. When you are deciding on companion plants for roses, check to see when they bloom. Other characteristics, such as texture and height, should also be considered before deciding on your companion plants. An excellent book on companion planting is Roses Love Garlic by Louise Riotte. Here’s an interesting link about companion planting. Choosing Your Plants Choose hardy roses. Generally, old varieties of roses are the hardiest. Try to pick roses that havent been grafted onto a different root stock. Choose the colors you like. Bare-root roses are less expensive than potted roses, but potted roses are easier to plant and more likely to survive Choose flowers from the onion family, or other companion families that will complement your roses. Once you have chosen your colors and plants, and have decided how to arrange them and what your rose garden will look like, you can dig in and begin working with your soil. Soil Soil is the key to healthy and beautiful roses. Dig into your rose plot in several places to see what the soil it is like. Soil is seldom perfect. It may have too much clay, too much sand, tons of rocks, or any of a dozen different problems. pH is also important. You should test your soil pH. pH kits are available at nurseries and over the internet. A good pH test kit is worth the expense because inexpensive ones are often inaccurate. Most roses grow well with a soil pH of 5.5 to 7, although a pH of 6.5 is ideal. pH is a measure of acid-base balance and uses a scale of 1 to 14. 1 is extremely acid; 7 is neutral; and 14 is extremely basic (alkaline). Few flowers will grow in a pH that is too acid or too alkaline. A pH of 6.5 is the point where nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, plus trace minerals, are most easily available to your flowers. Arid regions tend to have alkaline soils and regions with heavy rainfall tend to have acidic soils. How Much To Water Roses Roses like a lot of water during the growing and blooming season. But this doesn’t mean give them a small amount every day. Like with watering other plants, it is better to water deeply rather than just a little bit at a time, so that the water can fully penetrate the roots. Just sprinkling them with the hose is not enough. Let the hose give your roses a full, thorough soaking. A good four or five gallons worth of water per rose bush is a basic rule of thumb. Depending on how much rain your garden gets, a deep watering once a week is usually enough even in drier parts of the country. If it is extremely hot and dry, perhaps every four days or so. Avoid watering during the heat of the day in direct sunlight. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to water. The Magic of Humus If your soil is out of the correct pH range, you can change it. This is where the magic of soil biology creates miracles. Humus is the magic formula for most soil problems. Humus, which you can create by composting with compost bins, will help improve your soil pH. It will also improve soil that is too sandy, has too much clay, or has other problems. If your soil is extremely acid, which can happen in an area with heavy rainfall, or soil that has had overdoses of chemical N-P-K fertilizer, you may need to add limestone to sweeten the soil. For most other soil problems, humus is the answer. You may not have humus available. If that is the case, dont worry. We will discuss how mulching can help your roses. For more information on composting, see the Composting Guide. You can create compost with plant clippings and other yard debris, rather than throwing them away. They will provide you with a continuous supply of humus in the future. You should be careful if you decide to purchase compost. Many compost products are not fully composted and are still too hot for your garden. Organic fertilizers should be added during the growing cycle. You can even find special organic rose fertilizer that is designed specifically with rose gardening in mind. Planting Roses It is best to plant your roses between spring and early summer so that they have time to develop a root system before winter sets in. Roses dont like to be crowded, so give them enough room. Hybrid teas, grand floras, and floribundas should be planted 18 to 30 inches apart. Climbers should be planted 8 to 12 feet apart. Miniatures can be planted approximately 12 to 15 inches apart. If you have container roses, make sure they have been watered and keep them wet while working. Dig holes for your roses that are 2 times the size of the root ball. It is a good idea to put some well composted organic matter in the bottom of the hole. Mix more composted matter with the soil that you removed, but are planning to put back in the hole. If you dont have composted matter available, you can substitute a good quality planting mix. It is best to use planting mix that doesnt contain chemical fertilizers, although it is sometimes difficult to find. Take the rose plant out of the container and put the rose plant in the hole. Pack the prepared dirt under and around the rose, making sure that the dirt on the top of the rose root-ball is level with the ground. It is a good idea to put a straight stick across the hole to make sure the dirt level of the rose is the same as the ground level. If your rose is planted above or below ground level, it may have a difficult time growing properly. Planting bare-root roses is the same process, except that you must gently pack the dirt around the roots. If you have a grafted rose, you need to make sure that the graft union is a little bit below ground level. Purchasing organic rose fertilizer will insure that you have fertilizer to add during the growing season, if you don’t already have it on hand at home. Mulch Mulching will help your roses after they are planted. Mulching is the practice of adding plant material, such as leaves, dead grass, or shredded bark on top of the soil. The plant material will eventually be broken down and pulled into the soil by soil denizens. It will become humus. Mulching also helps to retain moisture in the soil. In a natural environment, leaves fall to the ground and stay there. They act as mulch Pruning You will not need to prune your roses until next season. It is best to prune just before the early spring growth appears, which is March in most areas. You can check with your local nurseries to find out what is the best time in your area. If you are unfamiliar with pruning, it is best to watch a demonstration. There are many articles and books that explain how to prune, but a demonstration is worth ten thousand words. Do-it-yourself television shows often give demonstrations. Nurseries and rose clubs also sometimes give demonstrations. Once you see a demonstration, you will feel much more comfortable with the idea of pruning. Deadheading If you have planted repeat-flowering roses, your rose bushes will bloom more bountifully when you remove the spent blooms. This is called deadheading. Tips Hybrid tea roses or grand floras are best for classical long stem roses, but floribundas, shrubs, or climbing roses are a better choice if you want your rose garden to bloom continually. Climbers on a trellis can create an amazing display of color or hide an unsightly shed. Roses need well-drained soil. If you have clay, or other soil that doesnt drain, you may have to create a drain line or plant your roses in a raised bed. Dont forget mulch. Mulching around your roses and other plants will make them very happy and reduce pathogen problems. Purchase hardy roses that are resistant to infestation. These are often the older varieties. You will also find that sturdy varieties vary from region to region. Check with local organic gardening associations to find out what works best in your specific area and under your specific conditions. Instead of planting your roses in even rows, you can stagger them. By staggering them, you get more roses in a small space without crowing them. Many people are now getting into growing all things organic. Farmers are doing it with produce and meats, so it is natural that you might want to grow your roses that way also. Many people have problems using the pesticides and insecticides that go along with growing roses and keeping them healthy. Well, now you can use more natural methods of growing your roses. I will show you how in step by step detail. 1. Each bush that you want to plant will need to have a foot of space all around it so that the flowers can get the proper amount of circulation. It also helps to prevent leaf diseases for your roses. 2. You will want to purchase organic roses. You will want to buy roses that have a sturdy green stem and no blemishes on them. Bare root roses are best for this. 3. Along with roses that have green stems, you will need to look for stems that have evenly spaced leaves that are close together. 4. You will need to use well drained soil so that you can promote the healthy growth that will give the flower all of the water and nutrients that it needs from the root to the flower’s head. 5. Fix the soil so that you can build organically. You should use a raised bead if drainage is a constant problem. Ask your local garden center rep about how best to fix your soil to be organically correct. 6. Soak your bare root roses in a large container of composte tea for many hours before you plant them. 7. You must mound up enough good organic sol that is mixed with an equal amount of composte in the middle so that you can spread the roots out and down from where they meet at the trunk. 8. Now, plant the rose at the point where the stem breaks into the root so that it is at soil level, or approximately 1 inch below the top level if you live in an area that is prone to hard winters. 9. You have to check your bare root roses first. If your roots grow out in a tight circle, you have to cut a straight slice down each of its four sides. A knife is good for this. Then you will dig a hole that is 2 inches deeper than the container and at least twice as wide. 10. Mix your organic soil garden soil with an equal amount of composted and use your hands to gently spread the roots into the soil mix. 11. You have to mulch to help you prevent your roses from being exposed to weeds, and water stress complications. It will also ensure that your roses remain at their lowest possible maintenance level. 12. You must feed your roses organically also. Fertilize with organic fertilizer and maintain a regular watering schedule. 13. Water your organic roses deep at the planting, and then once every week after that during growing season so that you can promote deep roots. Watering in the early morning is best. 14. You must cultivate the top inch of your soil around each of your roses and fertilize on a monthly basis with a balanced organic fertilizer. You will need a good granular type of fertilizer that you can work into the soil. Either that, or you can use a fish emulsion or seaweed based product that you can mix with water because it has all of the necessary nutrients that a healthy flower needs. Check the ingredients listed on the labels to ensure that they have nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron and calcium. 15. To help protect your bed against the various types of pests and insects that can plague your roses, put sticky yellow bars every ten feet to catch them. 16. You may use an organic pesticide if the problem is bad. 17. If your pest problem is severe enough, you may use insecticidal soap to spray over your roses. Now you have all of the necessary knowledge that you need to grow your own bed of earth friendly roses. Your flowers will be just as beautiful as those that are not grown organically, and will likely have the healthiest life span that a rose can get. Organic roses have some of the best color and “immune systems” that a rose can have. The fragrance of them can’t be beaten. CALENDAR OF ROSE CARE SPRING Fertilize with blood and bone, up to 1 kg per bush, depending on soil fertility, mixed with 100g of sulphate of potash per bush, potash improves disease resistance (dont use muriate of potash, it has a harmful effect on beneficial soil organisms). Apply a good mulch of well-rotted compost and lucerne hay. Spray new foliage in the afternoon with seaweed, repeat every 10-14 days SUMMER Fertilize repeat bloomers in mid to late summer Fertilize again with 100g of sulphate of potash per bush AUTUMN In the subtropics, hybrid tea and floribundas should be hard-pruned in February, this gives the plant a rest and stops flowering in the heat and humidity of the wet season, when flowers will just collapse anyway. Remove all rose prunings as they can harbor disease. The plant should be ready to flower again by late March, when it is cooler. Roses often flower well from March to July, remove spent blooms on a regular basis. Fertilize again with blood and bone and 100g of sulphate of potash per bush WINTER In cool areas this is the main period for pruning. Trim bushes lightly in August, before the cold westerly winds start blowing. Spray with lime sulphur or Bordeaux mixture to kill fungal spores. Dust the soil with lime to provide calcium. The Truth About Losing Weight On A Vegetarian Diet

By Erik Leipoldt It does not matter what you eat. Just dont eat a lot, exercise, and your weight will not be a problem. True? Not quite! There is scientific evidence that a vegetarian diet keeps that weight down, whereas meat eaters put it on. What you eat does matter. You know that weight loss is an industry. A money-making industry with many claims to make: Claims of weight loss pills, herbs and juices. Claims of exercise machines and exercise programmes. Claims of high-fat, no fat or lean diets. Which work? Which do not? How to find those things that work? It is bewildering. And expensive! The US FDA has warned against the effectiveness of a number of products that are being marketed. They include fat or starch blockers, weight loss chewing gum and body wraps. Even weight loss earrings and spectacles are in this list. Perhaps the last one is effective when your friends wear them to look at you? By contrast, vegetarians and vegans know what they eat and why they eat it. They save money and lose weight. Weight loss of both your body and your wallet? Why not. Vegetarian food production is inherently cheaper than that of meat. Just like a high fibre vegetarian diet goes through your system faster, the vegetarian food production chain is short compared to that of growing meat. Growing animals for meat is after all energy-intensive, time-consuming and expensive. For instance, it takes five kilograms of grain to produce one kilogram of beef. It is that concentrated energy that you eat. And its not high-fibre. Short production cycles are better for the planet and shorter digestive processes are better for you. Perhaps you do not even need special low calorie vegetarian recipes to lose weight. A vegetarian or vegan diet appears to be a recipe for weight loss in itself! At least it represents an excellent start. Consider the latest research. Vegetarian and vegan diets work Recent British scientific research is based on a study of 22,000 people who were followed over five years. All participants put on weight over that time. However, meat eaters who changed to a vegetarian diet gained the least weight. Prof Tim Keys, who led this study for the University of Oxford and Cancer Research UK, obtained interesting results that are contrary to popular beliefs. His study is published in the Journal of Obesity. He said: Contrary to current popular views that a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein keeps weight down, we found that the lowest weight gain came in people with high intake of carbohydrates and low intake of protein. The study involved meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans. On average the entire human sample population gained 2 kilos over the five years and none of them were overweight. The less consumption of animal products, the less weight was gained, leaving the vegans on top, with vegetarians runners-up. And the bit about exercising then? Well, its part of a holistic picture it seems. The study also found that those who became more physically active gained less weight than those who did not. No surprises there. So, not good news for vegan couch potatoes and a ray of hope for raging carnivores? Well, the simple message is, whatever you eat, physical activity is part of the weight loss, and health-deal. Good health Health too? Yes, this study is part of a larger investigation by EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), comparing half a million peoples diets in 10 countries to learn how diet is linked to cancer. Results from EPICs investigation show that diet is a leading cause of some cancers. A balanced vegetarian or vegan diet is good for your health. Take diabetes, often a condition associated with inadequate diet and being over-weight. The EPIC study has revealed that diabetics carry three times the normal risk of developing colo-rectal cancer. And a recent Australian study even suggests that a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruit can reduce the effects of asthma attacks. The wider benefits of choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for weight loss are obvious. But perhaps youd still rather take the easy way out and continue to eat meat. Meat perhaps that has been engineered for your health? Voila! Researchers at Harvard University have now engineered pigs to produce healthy forms of bacon, ham and pork crackling. Three little pigs were genetically modified to carry Omega 3-converting genes of a nematode worm. This gives the meat of these three little research pigs the benefits of fats and oils found in fish and vegetables! Talk about a long production process to get the same benefits from plants that take a fraction of the energy and time to produce. Im telling no porky: before long pigs will fly But do you want to eat them? Motivation Weight loss may be your focus but you can see that its achievement is connected to a holistic picture, including your health and that of the world we live in. That is why you could say that many vegetarians and vegans are socially responsible eaters. Perhaps that insight will give you the motivation to become a vegetarian or vegan: to lose weightand to discover a whole new world! Of course some people have medical conditions that cause them to be over weight. It would be foolish to recommend a vegetarian diet as a miracle cure in those instances. But in all other cases of being over weight there is one over-riding thing that you need: motivation. If you know why you want to lose weight you will do it. Motivation is everything. The evidence is in on effectiveness of vegetarian diets with respect to weight loss. If you also know that you are doing your body and the planet a favour by losing weight through vegetarian or vegan diets then what are you waiting for? Its over to you! Dr Erik Leipoldt PhD has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 30 years and his children were raised vegetarian. He uses a wheelchair due to spinal cord injury and attributes much of his good health and normal weight to his vegetarian diet. He writes about vegetarianism from his personal experience and knowledge found along the track, in his blog: http://low–calorie–and–vegetarian–recipe.blogspot.com/ Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Erik_Leipoldt http://EzineArticles.com/?The-Truth-About-Losing-Weight-On-A-Vegetarian-Diet&id=168746 how long before school starts receive loan money steal loan money baton rouge car loan bad credit history cash for check payday maryland
